ROA’s eagerly anticipated UK solo debut opened earlier this month down at the Pure Evil Gallery exhibiting his unique portrayal of large scale urban wildlife, disquietly cohabiting city streets, hand painted in his distinctive black and white style.
Pure Evil Gallery, Leonard Street, London

ROA started painting abandoned buildings and warehouses in the isolated industrial outskirts of his hometown - Ghent, Belgium. Fixating on the animals he found there; the wildlife became the central subject matter of his work, inspired by their clever ability to adapt into scavengers in order to survive. He used the dilapidated, coarse interiors and exteriors of the unyielding landscape as a canvas to portray his large-scale creatures.

Roa filled a vast abandoned warehouse complex of different chambers and exteriors with a menagerie of large-scale animals, creating an impressive spray painted zoo of city scavengers.

His obsession went global when he took to the streets of New York, London, Berlin, Warsaw and Paris, prolifically painting his trademark cross sectioned animals wherever he went, locating them where they naturally invade the main city streets with their quiet yet powerful presence.

Usugrow started drawing in 1993 by creating punk rock flyers. Now, as well as still being hugely successful as a commercial designer for album covers, fashion brands & skate companies, the Japanese-born artist has been exhibiting his fine art in galleries all over the world and his black and white illustrations have become instantly recognizable. Heavily influenced by Los Angeles 'Cholo' style graffiti fused with the spiritual skills of Asian calligraphy. In his work he very often beautifully portrays opposing elements such as delicate lines and unique lettering style, skulls and flowers, yin and yang and of course his palette of black and white,. He believes that this is everyday life and living proof that these opposing elements can exist together.

A couple of weeks go we ran a competition to win some Superoboturbo prints. All you had to do was email us with what you thought was going on in his latest print. There are some VERY strange people out there (you know who you are!). We have selected five winners and would like to share their stories.

Time was, when she was feeling low, he'd put a record on - some knowingly ironic un-funk, squelchy synths and clipping drum machines - and make an exhibition of himself. Awkward dancing was something that came naturally to him: he had two left feet and neither of them seemed to know what the other was doing. He'd realised a long time ago that he couldn't dance, and she knew it too. In fact, she loved him for it, in a stupid lind of way. He'd look a dick, but she'd laugh and throw a cushion at him, and the clouds would part to reveal a crystal blue sky.

Lately, though, the clouds had grown heavy and dark, and all the bad dancing in the world couldn't lift them. He watched her for hours trying to figure out what was going on behind her eyes. Something had occupied her mind, it seemed, and he didn't know how to dispell this unwelcome visitor. And so he danced, with feet of lead and a strange feeling in his chest. He didn't know what else to do.

The character on the left is a woman (a ”bird”), hence the little bird in the head. She is madly in love (check out the heart on her right knee) with the guy on the right. She has clearly expressed her feelings to the guy; her mask came off as they say (here in Belgium), she hides her feelings no longer. You can see the artist has taken this “mask came off” thing pretty seriously; she holds her mask in her arms.

The guy has clearly got mixed emotions; he still doesn’t know whether or not to let his feelings go freely or not. He is in emotional turmoil, crying and generally into a “not knowing what to do kinda state of mind”. He wants to run away ! He ponders between love (left side of head; heart coming out) and hate (right side, the little thunderstorm icon). What’s even worse, he has got butterflies in his stomach but doesn’t interpret this correctly. “I just ate a large curry and that’s causing this odd-stomachy-feeling... This ain’t love”.

The bird remains calm and quiet... She knows he will understand soon. The “understanding” meaning they will both speak the same language. Yes indeed, you will have noticed the bloke has got a little bird on his hand... Soon these two birds will talk to each other, meaning they will let go of all fears. You can even see the bird on the bloke’s hand is looking into the direction of the girlie bird. Aaah there is an opening. Lovebirds... Ain’t it beautiful !

The ballad of chirpy and quirky (by Fe Murray)

Sailing on a cloud of light early one spring morning quirky heard a sound of pure delight. It was bright and clear echoing around his ears hypnotizing him with each sweet melodic strain. He circled round the heavens casting beams of rainbow light down to earth..for he must illuminate this enchanting sound and immerse himself in its charm.

Then the shiniest prism of light danced over his retinas and carried with it the dynamic electro funk of chirpy’s song. Quirky’s ears buzzed with lightning and he wept with joy at the sound of that pure harmony. There Chirpy stood.. with head in her hands humility and the most dazzling jewel colors emitting from her diamond lips forming perfect prism notes that reflected straight into Quirky’s soul.

Together their palettes formed all the colors of the universe and every tune of love into the ever-after.

She wanted to find a way to his heart after all the pain she caused. “A bird in the head is worth two in the bush,” she thought. Timid, shy, clutching her bag like a schoolgirl. But her unfaithfulness bled through, as the illicit phone number within seemed to transform her bag into the visage of her lover.

In desperation, she opened her mind to him - for the first time - as he was walking away for the last time.

He, on the other hand, was conflicted. The chirping of the bird reminded him of times past. Tears flowed as he thought of everything he had given up: his status, his livelihood, his starting position with Ajax. But although his words were filled with jagged corners, his heart spoke a different language. It was a language that dripped onto the floor in pools of desire and love, death and life. Even in his loins he felt the danger. His passion was unabated by his reason.

As he ran away, leaving feelings on the floor for the janitor to clean up, he held on to the reminder of the bird in her head.

A while back an amazing, talented, extremely special friend of ours dreamed of an idea to create a travelling food paradise. He would turn up at any strange kitchen and create miracles, food, fun and laughter. Always believing in the freshest of ingredients and it's provenance, but strangely not believing that Ice Cream could be made in England.
His legacy has opened it's doors in the form of the 'Nomad Chef Secret Restaurant' This is seriously undercover and in the spirit of the original Speakeasies so don't tell the cops.

This exhibition will form part of the Original Cultures London 2010 event and run from February 12th until March 7th. This will be the trio’s second collaborative project following their work during Original Cultures’ first event in Bologna, Italy, in June 2009 which saw them create an exclusive animation and shadow-based installation. As visiting guests, Ericailcane and DEM will take the lead bringing to StolenSpace a collection of brand new paintings and other media. Will Barras meanwhile will be exhibiting a new animation and associated designs he is producing exclusively for the show. Together these three artists have received worldwide acclaim in recent years, exhibiting from Los Angeles to Sweden via Hong Kong and Eastern Europe.t

Exclusive to the exhibition will be the release of a limited edition collaborative screen print by the three artists and printed by StolenSpace, as well as a series of 6 picture discs produced by Original Cultures and featuring art from Will Barras, Ericailcane and DEM and music from Om Unit (UK), Tatsuki (JP) and Tayone (IT), the three musicians involved in the OriginalCultures project. These picture discs, six 10”s, will be framed and sold with a separate 7” featuring two exclusive tracks from each musician. These discs,combining visual arts and music in a rather unique package, are exclusive to the exhibition.

Banksy film to debut at Sundance

Exit Through The Gift Shop will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival,It will be the first time the elusive artist, who has never revealed his identity, has spoken on camera.
Billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie", its inclusion in the festival has been shrouded in secrecy.
Sundance organisers are due to announce its inclusion at a press conference on Thursday.

Exit Through The Gift Shop will have its world premiere at the festival on Sunday.
It is described as the story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on him.
Infamous artist
Banksy said: "It's the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed".
The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work.
But until the film is shown, it is not known whether Banksy's identity will be revealed.

Marco Grassi strikingly proves that street art is no longer a homogenous art form that is easily to apprehend or to describe. Borders are floating. In the mid-1990s Grassi was a main protagonist of the Italian street art underground, but simultaneously studied fine arts at the Brera academy in Milan. In his art he amalgamates found footage and objects from daily life with gestures lent by Abstract Expressionism; he performs virtuosity with all painterly media. In an enduring inner dialog and with painting itself he produces his imagery. Why he addresses himself with the pseudonym “Pho” like a Vietnamese noodle soup, you can ask him directly. From the lyrics of OutKast’s pop anthem Hey Ya to clues laid out for the amnesiac protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s film Memento, the Polaroid has had a significant impact on contemporary culture. ‘Shake It: An instant History of the Polaroid’ brings to light some of the more intriguing and innovative examples in the history of the Polaroid photograph, exploring its cultural significance and the diversity of its applications. Besides work by some of the most important artists working with the medium, the show will also include Polaroids from other diverse professions and disciplines such as forensics, archaeology, medicine, filmmaking and fashion, as well as those of amateurs and enthusiasts.

Many of the works in this exhibition have never been shown in the UK before such as Michael Snow’s play on the immediacy of the image, Authorization, the mutilated, distorted, blurred self portraits by Lucas Samaras, who discovered the malleability of the format’s wet dyes and Guy Bourdin’s intimate, small-scale surreal visions.

Other highlights include David Hockney’s large composite Polaroid Nicholas Wilder Studying Picasso. Los Angeles 24th March 1982, which references the stylisation and methods of the cubists, Andy Warhol’s still-lifes of perfume bottles and shoes; the photographs that an avid shoe collector sticks on to her shoeboxes for ease of identification; portraits of Richard Hamilton who, since 1968, has invited artist friends including Warhol, Francis Bacon, Robert Rauschenberg and Man Ray to photograph him; Polaroids of casting sessions from leading model agency Storm; Araki's suggestively sumptuous flower pictures, and the film made by Charles and Ray Eames’s in 1972 advertising the legendary leather panelled SX-70 model.

With the last batch of Polaroid film set to expire in October 2009, ‘Shake It’ is a timely exhibition that captures the aesthetic, conceptual and practical potential of an iconographic photographic format that is on the verge of extinction.

RCA SECRET IS 15!

RCA Secret is an annual exhibition and sale of original postcard-sized art, made by professional artists, designers and illustrators, plus the Royal College of Art’s current postgraduate students.
This year’s exhibition of over 2,000 pieces includes work by the renowned artists Gerhard Richter, Bill Viola, Julian Opie and Grayson Perry.
Open at the Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2EU from Friday 13 November until Friday 20 November 11-6pm, 11-8pm on Thursday 19 November. Free admission.

THE SECRET
The postcards are signed only on the reverse, so the author of each work remains a secret until after purchase, and the signature on the back is revealed.
Over 800 artists have donated work to RCA Secret 2009 so far, including Yoko Ono, Cornelia Parker, David Bailey, former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire, and animator Nick Park, as well as fashion designers Sir Paul Smith, Manolo Blahnik and Erdem. Many leading American artists have also contributed this year including Lawrence Weiner, John Baldessari and Alex Katz.

The cards, priced just £40 each, will be sold to the public in a huge one-day Sale on Saturday 21 November, 8am-6pm. You must register in advance of the Sale.

ROBERT CRUMB UNCOVERED

Robert Crumb, otherwise known as R. Crumb, is one of the leading figures of the 1966/ 67 underground comic movement. Philadelphia-born Crumb exploded onto the scene in the late 60's, heralding a renaissance of underground sex and drug comics. His LSD-inspired characters Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural quickly established him as a counter-culture icon.

The exhibition will feature all the iconic characters including; Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. Frisky Fritz the Cat is up to his old tricks in 'Fritz the No-Good'. An original drawing for the cover of Motorcity Comics features a typically Amazonian Crumb woman, putting the boot into a bulky New York cop. His rendering of a 'girl commando' has a visceral impact as she shouts Join the world - family revolution or die!!! A drawing of legendary singer and comic book fan Janis Joplin, singing into a phallic microphone, is printed on a sheet of acid tabs and signed by Timothy Leary.

"I had this big change in 1965 and 66 and it was visionary you know. I took this weird drug. Supposedly it was LSD but it had a really weird effect where it made my brain all fuzzy...I started getting these images of cartoon characters I'd never seen before, and drawing these stream of consciousness comic strips." Crumb's iconic character 'Mr. Natural' is featured in "on the bum again", a strip where a cowgirl lasso's him, sits on top of him and demands 'Just tell me real quick what the secret of the Universe is". This interest in the universe illustrates his spiritual leanings, which have come to the foreground with the recent international publication of his latest and most epic project - an illustration of The book of Genesis. Hardcore fans may be surprised by his new topic, although this time it's not a satire, it's a beautiful depiction of the Bible in the mould of William Blake that he created over a period of 5 years, in isolation in a shepherd's hut in rural France. The original Genesis pages will be on display in The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb's book of Genesis at the Hammer Museum in LA from 24 October 2009 to 7 February 2010. Crumb was raised as a Catholic and admits that he believes in God, and spiritual forces in the Universe. Maybe the psychedelic sex-obsessed Crumb of the 60's and 70's has mellowed in his old age.

The exhibition at Scream Gallery will be part of Comica, the London International Comics Festival, which takes place at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) from 5-26 November.

Viva Mexico

The exhibition will be the first in Europe focusing on the great age of Mexican printmaking in the first half of the twentieth century.

Between 1910 and 1920 the country was convulsed by the first socialist revolution, from which emerged a strong left-wing government that laid great stress on art as a vehicle for promoting the values of the revolution. This led to a pioneering programme to cover the walls of public buildings with vast murals, and later to setting up print workshops to produce works for mass distribution and education. All the prints in the exhibition come from the British Museum’s collection which has been acquired thanks to the generosity of the Aldama Foundation, Dave and Reba Williams and The Art Fund.

Some of the finest of these prints were produced by the three great men of Mexican art of the period known as ‘los tres grandes’: Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The best-known print is Rivera’s Emiliano Zapata and his horse which has achieved iconic status in twentieth century Mexican art. Other prints including Rivera’s portrait of Frida Kahlo, Siqueiros’ Dama Negra, Orozco’s The Masses, demonstrate the extraordinary breadth, imagination, and quality of the works shown. In addition to the Los Tres Grandes, many other artist were involved and rose to prominence, especially after the founding of the Taller del Gráfica Popular (TGP) in Mexico City in 1937. The range of material is fascinating: as well as single-sheet artists’ prints, there are large posters with designs in woodcut or lithography by these same artists, and illustrated books on many different themes. The exhibition will also include earlier works around the turn of the century by the popular printmaker, José Guadalupe Posada, who was adopted by the revolutionaries as the archetypal printmaker who worked for the people, and whose macabre dances of skeletons have always fascinated Europeans.

Printmakers in Mexico often belonged to groups, societies and movements which were underpinned by their commitment to politics. The earliest movement was Stridentism, an avant garde group which was launched 1921 and was similar to the Italian Futurist movement because it rejected the past. The Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP) was formed in 1937 by Luis Arenal, Leopoldo Méndez and Pablo O’Higgins as a graphic arts workshop which was influenced by communism. TGP members had access to printing equipment at the workshop and did not need to have artistic training. The collective produced prints for posters, flyers and portfolios which were printed on cheap paper. Their prints often supported the campaigns of trade and workers unions in Mexico. For example, Pablo O’Higgins and Alberto Beltrán collectively made a poster advertising the first Latin American Petrol Workers conference. The TGP was also particularly committed to the fight against international Fascism. Angel Bracho’s striking red and black poster, Victoria! (1945), which celebrates the allied victory over the Nazi’s in 1945, is a key example of the TGP’s anti-Fascist stance. Other printmakers addressed subjects such as corruption, capitalism and Mexican daily life in their prints.

Since the official opening of Mutate Britain's homecoming two weeks ago, over
7,500 people have passed through the doors already and to meet demand, the
exhibition is keeping its doors open for an extra week, through to the 1st of
November.

As well as the new pieces, guests will also be able to see an exclusive sneak
preview of Mutoid Waste's Glastonbury documentary from Ignite Creative.
